  • 1 cup Red Lentils (Masoor Dal) Rinsed and drained.
  • 1 medium Onion Finely chopped.
  • 1 medium Tomato Chopped.
  • 3 cloves Garlic Minced.
  • 1 inch Ginger Grated.
  • 1 teaspoon Cumin Seeds
  • 1 teaspoon Turmeric Powder
  • 1 teaspoon Coriander Powder
  • 1 piece Green Chili Slit.
  • to taste Salt
  • 2 tablespoons Oil or Ghee For tempering.
  • to taste Fresh Cilantro Chopped, for garnishing.

Instructions

  • Rinse the red lentils under cold running water until the water runs clear. Drain and set aside.
  • In a medium-sized pot, add the rinsed lentils and three cups of water. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for about 20 minutes until soft.
  • In a separate pan, heat oil or ghee over medium heat. Add cumin seeds and let them sizzle.
  • Add the chopped onion and cook until translucent and slightly golden.
  • Incorporate minced garlic, grated ginger, and slit green chili. Sauté for 2-3 minutes.
  • Add chopped tomato, turmeric powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until tomatoes soften.
  • Pour the tomato mixture into the cooked lentils and stir well. Simmer for another 5-10 minutes.
  • Garnish with chopped cilantro and serve hot with rice or naan.

Notes

For variations, consider adding coconut milk, vegetables, or adjusting spice levels to your preference.
