Instructions
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C).
Prepare your baking dish by greasing it lightly with butter or cooking spray.
Wash the apples thoroughly under running water and pat them dry.
Core the apples, leaving the bottom intact to hold the filling.
In a mixing bowl, combine brown sugar, cinnamon, nutmeg, and lemon juice. Stir until well blended.
Fill each cored apple generously with the sugar-spice mixture.
Place the filled apples upright in the prepared baking dish.
Cut the butter into small pieces and place them on top of the filled apples.
Pour a few tablespoons of water into the bottom of the baking dish.
Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil.
Bake for 25 minutes, then remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes.
Check for doneness by inserting a fork into one apple; they should be tender.
Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving.
Serve warm, drizzled with the sauce from the bottom of the dish.
Notes
Consider adding nuts or dried fruits for variations. Serve with ice cream for a decadent treat.
