Instructions
Combine 1 cup of active sourdough starter with 1 cup of lukewarm water in a large mixing bowl. Stir gently to combine.
Gradually add 4 cups of all-purpose flour to the bowl, one cup at a time, mixing until the dough starts to come together.
Let the mixture rest for about 30 minutes to allow the flour to absorb the water and begin gluten development.
Add 2 teaspoons of salt, 4 tablespoons of softened butter, and 2 tablespoons of sugar to the dough. Knead for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Form the dough into a ball and place it in a greased bowl, covering it with a damp cloth. Allow it to rise for about 4 to 6 hours, or until doubled in size.
Once risen, punch down the dough and divide it into 12 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a round ball.
Place the shaped rolls into a greased baking dish, cover, and let rise for another 1 to 2 hours.
Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Optionally brush the tops with melted butter before baking.
Bake the rolls for 20 to 25 minutes or until golden brown and sound hollow when tapped. Let cool slightly before serving.
Notes
Consider adding herbs, cheese, or dried fruits for variations. Store leftovers in an airtight container.
