Equipment

  • Medium saucepan
  • Mixing Spoon
  • Glass Jar

Ingredients

Ingredients

  • 1 cup buttermilk This is the star ingredient that gives the syrup its unique tangy flavor and creamy texture.
  • 1 cup granulated sugar Provides sweetness and helps to create that thick, syrupy consistency.
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter Adds richness and depth to the syrup.
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract Enhances the flavor of the syrup.
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda Helps to create a lighter texture in the syrup.

Instructions

  • In a medium saucepan, add the buttermilk, granulated sugar, and unsalted butter. Stir gently until the sugar begins to dissolve.
  • Place the saucepan over medium heat. Stir continuously as the mixture heats up to prevent the sugar from settling and burning.
  • Once the butter is fully melted, bring the mixture to a gentle simmer and allow it to simmer for about 5 minutes.
  • Remove the saucepan from heat and stir in the baking soda and vanilla extract. Be cautious as the mixture may bubble up.
  • Allow the syrup to cool for a few minutes before transferring it to a glass jar or airtight container.

Notes

Homemade buttermilk syrup can be stored in the refrigerator for up to two weeks. Give it a gentle stir or warm it slightly before serving if it thickens.
