  • 4 cups milk Whole milk is ideal for achieving a rich and creamy sauce.
  • 1 cup heavy cream Adds an additional layer of creaminess.

Fats and Seasonings

  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter Melted butter enhances the flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Offers depth and enhances the overall flavor profile.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder Adds a subtle sweetness and complexity.
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper Provides a hint of spice.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential for balancing flavors.
  • 1 teaspoon mustard powder Adds a bit of tanginess.
  • 1/4 teaspoon cayenne pepper Optional for those who enjoy a little heat.

Instructions

  • 1. Begin by preparing the elbow macaroni. Cook it in a pot of boiling water for about 6-8 minutes until al dente. Drain and set aside.
  • 2. In a large mixing bowl, combine the shredded sharp cheddar, mozzarella, and Parmesan cheeses.
  • 3. In another bowl, whisk together the milk, heavy cream, melted butter, garlic powder, onion powder, black pepper, salt, mustard powder, and cayenne pepper (if using).
  • 4. In the crockpot, add the cooked macaroni followed by the cheese mixture. Gently fold together.
  • 5. Cover the crockpot with its lid and set it to cook on low for 2 to 3 hours. Stir the mixture every 30 minutes.
  • 6. When the mac and cheese is nearly done, check the consistency. If it appears too thick, add a splash of milk.
  • 7. Once the mac and cheese is creamy and heated through, give it a final stir. Taste and adjust the seasoning if necessary.
  • 8. Serve hot and enjoy the comforting flavors of homemade mac and cheese!
