Oil for Frying

  • as needed vegetable oil Choose a neutral oil with a high smoke point.

Instructions

  • Peel the onions, cut off the ends, and slice them into thick rings, approximately 1/4 to 1/2 inch wide. Separate the rings and set aside.
  • In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper.
  • In another bowl, combine the buttermilk and egg, whisking until smooth.
  • Gradually add the wet mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring gently until just combined. Avoid over-mixing.
  • Heat the oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Test the oil by dropping a small amount of batter; it should sizzle.
  • Dip each onion ring into the batter, allowing excess to drip off before placing it in the hot oil.
  • Fry the onion rings in batches for 2-4 minutes until golden brown and crispy, turning occasionally.
  • Remove the onion rings with a slotted spoon and place them on paper towels to drain excess oil.
  • Repeat with remaining onion rings, adjusting heat as necessary.
  • Serve hot with your favorite dipping sauces.

Notes

For variations, consider adding spices for heat, cheese for richness, or baking instead of frying for a lighter option.
