Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and prepare two 9-inch round cake pans by greasing with butter and dusting with flour.
  • In a large mixing bowl, combine the dry ingredients: flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt. Whisk until well mixed.
  • Add softened butter to the dry ingredients and mix on low speed until it resembles coarse crumbs.
  • In a separate bowl, whisk the eggs, then add milk and vanilla. Mix until combined.
  • Gradually pour the wet mixture into the dry ingredients while mixing on medium speed until smooth.
  • Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans and smooth the tops.
  • Bake for 25-30 minutes, checking for doneness with a toothpick.
  • Allow cakes to cool in pans for 10 minutes, then invert onto a wire rack to cool completely.
  • For frosting, cream softened butter in a bowl, gradually add powdered sugar, and mix until combined.
  • Add milk to achieve desired consistency and mix until fluffy. Add food coloring if desired.
  • Once cakes are cool, place one layer on a serving plate and spread frosting on top.
  • Place the second layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake.
  • Decorate as desired and serve.

Notes

Store leftovers in an airtight container at room temperature for up to three days. Can be frozen for up to three months.
